Idea

competenz4u is Austria's leading provider of exam preparation content tailored to the national education system.
To expand its business model, the company wanted to go beyond static website content and create a dedicated mobile learning experience. The goal was to meet students where they spend most of their time and enable daily exam preparation through a simple and motivating app.
Especially in Austria, where school attendance is not compulsory beyond a certain age, accessible learning support plays a critical role.
The app was designed to support students through structured practice, immediate feedback, and gamified elements that make learning more engaging and sustainable.

Solution

We designed and built a mobile learning platform that complements the existing content offering with interactive exam preparation.
The solution consists of a Flutter based mobile app, a back-end that manages learning logic and user progress, and an admin panel that gives competenz4u full control over content.
Core functionality was designed to work without mandatory registration, while optional accounts enable long term progress tracking and performance insights.
The system combines structured content hierarchies, intelligent question selection, and gamification into one scalable product.

Step 5

Deployment

In a creative workshop, we analyzed the existing platform, defined goals for the mobile app, and translated requirements into a clear MVP roadmap focused on exam preparation use cases.
We developed a compact UI design system based on the existing brand while modernizing the look and feel for mobile usage. In parallel, the technical architecture for app and backend was prepared.
The mobile app and backend were developed across four structured sprints. Close collaboration allowed rapid feedback cycles and continuous alignment with competenz4u's expectations.
All features were tested individually and end to end. Bug fixes and refinements were applied to ensure stability and a smooth learning experience before launch.
The app was released and made available to users. We continue to support the platform to ensure long term stability and updates.

Integrations

  • Apple App Store In-App Purchases
  • Google Play In-App Purchases
  • Social Logins (Google, Apple, Facebook)

Main Features

User Registration and Profile Management

The app supports email based registration secured by a one time password verification process, as well as social logins via Apple, Google, and Facebook.
Registered users can manage personal data, review progress, and delete their account at any time.
Registration is optional and focused on long term learning continuity rather than access restriction, ensuring low entry barriers while enabling meaningful progress tracking over time.

User Registration and Profile Management

Guest Access

Users can access core functionality without creating an account.
They can complete tests, earn points, appear on leaderboards, and review results as guests. At any point, users may convert their guest usage into a registered account, keeping all existing progress.
This approach lowers friction while preserving long term value.

Test Creation and Execution

Users select their learning path through a structured questionnaire covering school type, grade, subject, and topic.
An algorithm assembles quizzes from a categorized question pool, adapting difficulty based on previous success.
Correct answers are excluded over time, while incorrect questions reappear to reinforce learning.
Each test provides immediate feedback and scoring.

Test Creation and Execution

Performance Review and Statistics

All completed tests are available for review.
Users can analyze performance across subjects and topics, identify strengths and weaknesses, and track preparation progress.
This transparency supports more focused and effective exam preparation.

Leaderboard and Gamification

The app includes subject and topic specific rankings that allow students to compare their scores with peers across Austria.
Points and rankings introduce competition and motivation without distracting from learning objectives.

Main Challenge

The biggest challenge was designing a database and content structure that could represent complex school systems, topics, and subtopics while remaining flexible and reusable.
Topics needed to work across different school types and exams without duplication.
At the same time, competenz4u required a simple way to import and manage large volumes of questions created by teachers.
We addressed this through joint workshops, careful data modeling, and a CSV based import process that balanced structure with usability.

What We Learned

We learned that content heavy platforms require strong structural foundations from the beginning.
Early collaboration with domain experts and shared validation of data models prevents costly restructuring later.

Why This Matters for Our Partners

These learnings help partners build scalable content systems that can grow without losing clarity. They reduce operational overhead and enable independent content expansion.

Our Advice

If your product relies on complex content hierarchies, invest early in data modeling and editorial workflows. This ensures scalability without blocking non technical teams.

Most Special Step

The most special part of this project was the design of the intelligent test flow within the mobile app. Combining structured configuration, adaptive question selection, and gamification required close alignment between UX, learning logic, and back-end implementation.
The challenge was to make exam preparation feel motivating without trivializing the content.
By tailoring tests to user choices and past performance, the app supports meaningful learning while keeping students engaged and motivated to practice regularly.

STRATEGY UI/UX SAAS WEB DEVELOPMENT PCapital - How a Cybersecurity Expert Became a Software Company Karoly Aczel Founder & CEO, Perpetuum Capital Ltd. 4.9 The founding team had years of hands-on ISO 27001 consulting experience and knew exactly what companies needed to get certified - but everything was delivered manually, one client at a time. The gap was clear: companies wanting ISO 27001 certification were either paying expensive consultants for work that could be structured into a guided tool, or they were lost in documentation without any support. The idea was to build two things that work together: a professional website that builds trust and sells digital products, and a SaaS application called Sentinel that guides organizations through ISO 27001 certification and ongoing ISMS management without needing a consultant in the room. One-person consultancy → platform business Use case STRATEGY UI/UX MARKETPLACE OfficeActor - End-to-End Influencer Booking Platform Marlon B. Founder & CEO, OfficeActor Marlon B. saw a clear gap in the market: companies wanting to collaborate with influencers had no structured way to find, evaluate, and book them. Everything happened through DMs, spreadsheets, and informal agreements. At the same time, influencers had no professional tool to manage incoming requests, track contracts, or get paid reliably. The idea was to build a two-sided platform that gives both parties a clean, structured workflow - from discovery to signed contract to payment. 0 manual booking steps Use case
